Obono Obla Rejects Atiku’s Claims of Insecurity in Calabar
Human rights activist and All Progressives Congress chieftain Okoi Obono Obla has rejected former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s claims about insecurity in Calabar, describing them as hearsay.
Speaking on television, Obono Obla said Calabar was among Nigeria’s safest cities and praised Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu for steps taken to improve security.
He said kidnappings of university lecturers and doctors had been frequent before Otu took office. According to Obono Obla, the governor appointed a retired major general as security adviser and increased support for police and other security agencies.
Obono Obla called Atiku’s remarks “very petty” and said they did not reflect the situation in the state.
He also described the stone throwing incident involving the campaign convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi as isolated. Obono Obla noted that similar incidents can occur during political campaigns in other countries, including the United States, and questioned whether internal tensions within Obi’s party may have played a role.
