Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo after the national team captain announced his retirement from international football, calling him an icon and a lasting symbol of the country’s game.
Jesus said Ronaldo’s career could inspire the next generation of players. He revealed that a large photograph of the forward had been placed in the team’s auditorium so young footballers could look up to him.
The coach also admitted he had hoped Ronaldo would continue playing for Portugal. “I asked him to continue with me because I needed him by my side. But I have to accept his decision,” Jesus said.
Ronaldo will remain close to the hearts of Portuguese fans, Jesus added, describing him as an enduring figure in the nation’s football history.
The forward’s international career includes helping Portugal win the 2016 European Championship and the 2019 UEFA Nations League. His achievements have made him one of the most influential figures in Portuguese sport.
