Airtel Fixes Call Drops with New Open Network Initiative

Zoyols News

Getting dropped calls or sluggish internet speeds can test anyone’s patience, but a major telecom player is trying a new approach to clear the air. Airtel Nigeria has just rolled out an Open Network initiative designed to give subscribers a literal map of what is happening behind the scenes with their mobile coverage.

Unveiled in Lagos by the company’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dinesh Balsingh, the platform invites users to peek into network infrastructure right from their neighborhoods. Instead of leaving customers guessing when a page will load or a call will drop, the feature lets people check the status of nearby network sites and flag trouble spots directly through the MyAirtel app.

The move comes as mobile connectivity becomes the lifeblood of daily routines across the country, powering everything from digital storefronts to virtual classrooms. Company leadership noted that gathering precise, location-specific data straight from the people experiencing the issues will help direct technical upgrades right where they are needed most.

Navigating the new feature is relatively straightforward for anyone with the app. By tapping into the Quick Actions section on the home screen and sharing location permissions, users are greeted with a map that uses a simple color-coded legend. Active sites currently handling traffic show up in red, locations undergoing active upgrades glow blue, and future sites slated for development appear in black.

Clicking on individual pins reveals deeper technical details, such as unique site ID numbers, whether the tower is running on fourth or fifth-generation technology, and what kind of capacity expansion is underway. If a user runs into trouble, a built-in feedback portal directs them to report specific hurdles like persistent video buffering, dropped calls, or crawling data speeds. The system prompts for a few handy details, such as whether the glitch happens indoors or outside, giving Airtel’s engineering teams a sharper lens for troubleshooting.

The rollout has already earned a nod of approval from industry regulators. Speaking at the launch event, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida, praised the move as a step forward for consumer empowerment. He pointed out that while telecom companies frequently tout massive financial investments in infrastructure, everyday subscribers care far more about when those dollars will actually translate into better signal bars in their homes and offices.

At the same time, regulatory authorities offered a reality check, reminding the public that proximity to a cell tower does not automatically translate to flawless service. Obstacles like network congestion, transmission bottlenecks, and technical limitations can still throw a wrench into things.

Zoyols News notes that this digital shift arrives against a backdrop of mounting public frustration over declining service standards. Lawmakers recently turned up the heat on industry leaders, demanding answers regarding ongoing connectivity struggles despite billions of naira pumped into network upgrades. While operators continue pouring massive capital into infrastructure, stubborn hurdles like fiber-optic cable cuts and equipment vandalism continue to complicate efforts to keep Nigeria fully connected.
