Nigerian socialite and reality television personality Sophia Momodu has initiated legal proceedings against fellow reality star Caroline Hutchings, popularly known as Caroline Danjuma, over an alleged defamatory social media post.
The dispute began after Caroline shared a message on Snapchat in which she claimed that a woman she had once defended publicly on national television was involved with her former partner while they were still together. Although the post did not identify anyone by name, it quickly generated widespread speculation across social media.
Following the development, Sophia, through her legal representatives, issued a Notice of Intended Legal Proceedings against Caroline. The notice demands an immediate retraction of the publication, a public apology without reservations, ₦10 billion in damages and other reliefs over the alleged harm caused by the post.
The legal notice, signed by Prince Dr. Richard Oma Ahonaruogho, SAN, Principal Counsel at Ahonaruogho, Ahonaruogho and Co., argues that despite Sophia not being mentioned directly, many social media users interpreted the Snapchat post as referring to her.
According to the notice, the widespread assumptions led to reputational damage, emotional distress and persistent cyberbullying. It stated that Sophia became the target of ridicule, abusive comments and attacks on her integrity and public image as discussions spread across various online platforms.
The document also disclosed that in an attempt to settle the matter without going to court, Sophia personally contacted Caroline on July 3, 2026. She reportedly requested that if the post was not about her, Caroline should publicly state so on the same platform where the original message was shared.
However, the notice claims that Caroline neither replied to the request nor issued any clarification, allowing public speculation to continue.
Sophia’s legal team maintains that the situation caused significant embarrassment and negatively affected her reputation among family members, friends, business associates and the wider public.
The legal action has since sparked mixed reactions on social media, with many questioning the basis of the lawsuit since no individual was specifically identified in the original Snapchat post.
Several users argued that Caroline never mentioned Sophia’s name. Some suggested that filing a lawsuit over an unnamed reference may not be justified, while others insisted that the public’s interpretation of the post should not automatically amount to defamation.
Others, however, expressed confidence in Sophia’s legal team, while some questioned the size of the ₦10 billion compensation being sought. The case has continued to generate debate online as many await the next stage of the legal proceedings.
