The collaboration is aimed at improving waste management, promoting environmental sanitation and public health protection, and encouraging the use of sustainable energy through biotechnology.
The two agencies formalised their cooperation through a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) covering the development, training and deployment of biogas technology. They also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in biotechnology for environmental and public health protection.
The agreement was announced on Monday at the NBRDA headquarters in Abuja, during a meeting attended by the leadership and representatives of both agencies.
Speaking at the event, EHCON Registrar, Dr. Yakubu Mohammed Baba, welcomed the partnership, describing collaboration between the agencies as an important step towards tackling Nigeria’s environmental challenges.
He said the initiative would help turn waste management problems into economic opportunities by creating wealth, generating employment and promoting more sustainable practices in abattoirs and related facilities.
Baba also highlighted the research and technological capacity available to the agencies, expressing confidence that the partnership would deliver practical benefits to Nigerians and support the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
In his remarks, NBRDA Director General, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, commended EHCON for taking steps to formalise cooperation between the two institutions.
Mustapha stressed the importance of applying biotechnology to environmental sanitation, waste to wealth initiatives and sustainable energy production, noting that these areas offer opportunities to address pressing environmental concerns while supporting economic development.
He disclosed that NBRDA had developed technology with potential applications in abattoirs and related facilities. He added that the agency was prepared to support its deployment and work towards the effective implementation of the initiatives agreed upon by both institutions.
The partnership is expected to strengthen efforts to improve abattoir waste management, protect public health and expand the use of biogas as a cleaner energy source across Nigeria.
