The political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election is already shifting into high gear, and key players are starting to lay their cards on the table. Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has openly addressed why he believes former vice president Atiku Abubakar should step aside and back Peter Obi instead.
Speaking during a recent interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today , Kwankwaso pointed to decades of shared political history as the foundation for his frank stance. Rather than treating the topic as taboo, the former Kano State governor explained that he is looking at the bigger picture and believes a fresh political arrangement is necessary for the country moving forward.
When pressed on whether he was genuinely pushing for Atiku to abandon his presidential ambitions this time around, Kwankwaso did not hesitate to confirm it. He shared that he recently seized an opportunity during a courtesy visit from a nationwide delegation of Fulani leaders to urge them to carry that exact message back home. In his view, having trusted voices from various communities speak directly with Atiku about stepping aside is a practical step toward building a more unified opposition.
Beyond the ongoing debates over ticket alliances and political maneuverings, the conversation also touched on pressing economic concerns, with the party outlining its stance on the contentious issues surrounding fuel pricing and subsidies. As the countdown to 2027 continues, these early alignments and strategic conversations suggest that the race for the presidency will be anything but predictable.
