The Nasarawa State Government confirmed the casualties and extent of the damage through the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Nawani Aboki, who briefed journalists in Lafia on Monday.
Aboki said the flooding had severely affected communities in the Eke Development Area of Doma, forcing many residents to abandon their homes as rising water swept through the affected locations.
According to the commissioner, several buildings and large areas of farmland were destroyed, leaving many families displaced and facing uncertainty over their livelihoods.
He disclosed that the State Emergency Management Agency had visited the affected communities and was compiling a report to guide the government’s response and determine the necessary assistance for victims.
Aboki also revealed that he had visited the affected areas alongside the chairman of Doma Local Government Area to assess the situation, sympathise with displaced residents and offer condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones.
The commissioner urged residents who had fled their homes to remain away from low lying areas, warning that the situation could worsen if more water was released from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.
He cautioned that the uncertainty surrounding possible water releases made it unsafe for displaced families to return to vulnerable locations, stressing the need for residents to prioritise their safety until conditions improve.
