The Independent National Electoral Commission has drawn a firm line ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that anyone targeting electoral workers will face the full weight of the law.
Speaking in Port Harcourt during the South-South Zonal Readiness Assessment and Interactive Staff Engagement, the Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, made it clear that the safety of permanent employees, ad-hoc personnel, and members of the National Youth Service Corps is non-negotiable. He emphasized that despite ongoing security concerns, the electoral body remains unwavering in its constitutional duty to deliver transparent polls.
The Port Harcourt meeting marks the fifth leg of a nationwide zonal assessment tour, following previous engagements in the South-West, North-West, South-East, and North-East.
Detailing the commission’s strategic approach, the INEC leadership explained that preparations have shifted toward a more field-oriented focus. Achieving credible elections across all one hundred and twenty-three local government areas spanning the six South-South states will require robust coordination, grassroots engagement, and heightened security vigilance as the nation counts down to 2027.
