Liverpool wonderkid Rio Ngumoha has taken a major step toward committing his international future to England after being invited to join their senior World Cup training camp.
The 17 year old, who was born in England to Nigerian parents, has been named among a group of young players selected by England coach Thomas Tuchel to train with the senior squad ahead of preparations for the 2026 World Cup in the United States.
Ngumoha was not included in the final England squad for the tournament, but his invitation to the training camp is being seen as a strong indication of where his international future may lie. He joins other promising youngsters such as Josh King and Alex Scott in the development group.
The development comes as a setback for Nigeria, who had hoped to convince the teenage forward to switch allegiance to the Super Eagles.
Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey reportedly made personal efforts to speak with Ngumoha after a Premier League match, encouraging him to consider representing Nigeria at senior level. Despite those discussions, the young forward has continued on the path of representing England at youth level.
Ngumoha, who is eligible for both nations through his heritage, has already built an impressive reputation at club level. Last season, he made 18 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, scoring twice and providing one assist, a breakthrough campaign that has further boosted his profile in European football.
His steady rise through England’s youth ranks and recent senior camp invitation suggest he is edging closer to a long term commitment with the Three Lions, even as Nigeria continues to monitor his international decision closely.
