United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday officially launched a 16 day celebration marking the country’s 250th anniversary with a speech that closely resembled one of his campaign rallies, placing his second term agenda at the centre of the national event.
The ceremony, held on the National Mall in Washington, reflected Trump’s approach to the historic celebration, blending patriotic activities with strong political messaging. The event highlighted how the anniversary has increasingly taken on the style and tone that have become closely associated with the president’s public appearances.
Although Trump eventually reflected on the nation’s history and journey toward independence, much of his speech focused on familiar political themes that have defined his campaign events.
Addressing the audience, the president declared that America had regained its strength and standing on the global stage.
“As we stand on the edge of our 250th year of independence, I am thrilled to declare that America is back,” Trump said, adding that the country had moved from a period of decline to becoming what he described as the hottest nation in the world.
Trump also defended his administration’s foreign policy, describing the United States and Israeli military operation against Iran as a major achievement for Americans. He further praised what he called the successful capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, describing it as one of history’s greatest military operations.
Turning to domestic issues, the president highlighted what he described as a strong economy while sharply criticising the record of former President Joe Biden, calling his administration a complete failure. Trump also claimed the United States had attracted 19 trillion dollars in investment, a figure that exceeds estimates previously released by his own administration.
Throughout much of the address, Trump’s tone remained relatively calm. However, he became noticeably more enthusiastic while discussing renovation projects involving buildings, monuments, and public landmarks across Washington.
He maintained that his administration continues to deliver major achievements for the American people and promised further progress in the months ahead.
The speech also marked the opening of the Great American State Fair, a free public festival organised to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
The fair, which runs until July 10, features exhibitions representing all 50 states and six United States territories along the National Mall between the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial.
Visitors are expected to enjoy regional food, cultural exhibitions, military flyovers, live musical performances, a 110 foot Ferris wheel, a restored Smithsonian carousel, military bands, and patriotic displays, including a giant illuminated “250” projected onto the Washington Monument.
Despite the festive atmosphere, critics argue that the celebration has become increasingly focused on Trump’s personal political image rather than serving purely as a national commemoration of American history.
During his speech, the president promised what he described as a new American golden age, portraying himself as the leader responsible for restoring the country’s strength after years of decline.
The event became even more politically charged after several musicians originally scheduled to perform withdrew from the programme, expressing concerns that the celebration had taken on a partisan character.
Trump later announced that he would serve as the event’s headline attraction, saying on social media that he could attract larger crowds than legendary entertainer Elvis Presley. He also promised that the musical selections would appeal to his supporters.
The revised entertainment programme featured singer Lee Greenwood, whose song “God Bless the USA” has become a regular feature at Trump’s political events, alongside opera singer Christopher Macchio and several military bands.
The anniversary celebration comes at a politically important period for Trump as he seeks to shift public attention from the conflict involving Iran while continuing to defend his administration’s record on the economy, immigration, and national security ahead of the November midterm elections.
The president has also faced criticism over plans to leave a lasting personal imprint on Washington through proposals that include constructing a White House ballroom, building a triumphal arch, and funding extensive renovation work at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which has experienced algae growth and deteriorating paint.
Speaking enthusiastically about the ongoing projects, Trump assured supporters that this year’s Independence Day celebration would be the greatest show ever staged.
Among those attending the event was Barbara Van Riper, a 57 year old supporter from Florida, who praised the president’s leadership.
According to her, Trump continues to stand up for America, defend the American dream, and protect the freedoms valued by the country’s citizens.
