Boater Saves Florida Woman From Violent Alligator Attack

Zoyols News

What started as a quiet family day on Florida’s Silver River spiraled into a terrifying struggle for survival this past weekend. Dina Rae Spann, a 58-year-old swimmer, was enjoying the water east of Ocala when a nearly ten-foot alligator launched a sudden, violent attack. The encounter left the swimmer fighting for her life after the reptile bit her arm and pulled her beneath the surface.

The victim desperately tried to fend off the predator with a paddle, but the attack was relentless, resulting in the loss of her right arm and a finger on her other hand. The situation might have ended in complete tragedy if not for the sharp eyes of a nearby boater, John Gamache.

Gamache was having lunch with his father when he spotted the massive animal closing in on the group. He moved his boat into action immediately, and the noise of his vessel provided just enough of a distraction to cause the gator to retreat. When he reached the scene, he found the woman clinging to a paddleboard in blood-stained water, surrounded by panicked swimmers. Acting quickly, he used a rope to fashion a makeshift tourniquet for her arm, preventing further blood loss as he raced her toward the boat launch.

Medical professionals were waiting to transport her to the hospital, where she eventually underwent the difficult surgery to amputate her arm. Remarkably, she was discharged by the following day and is currently recovering at home.

While authorities have since reopened the river after locating and removing the animal, the incident has left a lasting impact on the local community. The victim’s son believes the alligator may have been emboldened by visitors illegally feeding wildlife in the area, a practice that strips these creatures of their natural caution around people. As his mother focuses on her recovery, her family has expressed profound gratitude for the man who saw the danger and refused to look away, potentially saving her life in those critical moments.
