Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has spoken out in defence of Pastor Enoch Adeboye, following recent criticisms linked to claims surrounding the cancellation of a planned protest. He also cautioned Nigerians against narratives that could further deepen ethnic and social tensions in the country.
In a statement shared on his verified X account on Thursday, Obi reflected on the political climate during the 2023 elections, especially in Lagos State. He noted that rather than focusing on governance, competence, and national development, public discussions at the time were often shaped by ethnic and tribal sentiments, a shift he believes weakened unity.
He explained that when political competition becomes difficult on the basis of ideas, performance, and vision, some actors tend to rely on identity based divisions to gain advantage. According to him, such patterns risk resurfacing as future elections draw closer, with deliberate efforts already being made in some quarters to fuel suspicion among citizens.
Obi further observed that many Nigerians may unknowingly get drawn into conversations that promote division rather than understanding, stressing the need for greater awareness and caution.
Addressing the concerns directed at Pastor Adeboye, Obi described him as one of the country’s most respected spiritual leaders, whose public message over the years has consistently focused on peace, prayer, reconciliation, and unity. He added that even in moments of criticism, the cleric has often responded with calmness, humility, and restraint.
He also urged Nigerians not to place undue expectations on elderly figures, noting that responsibility for national progress should rest primarily on the younger and more active population. In his words, it would be unfair for younger citizens to shift the burden of reform onto someone of advanced age.
Obi called on young Nigerians to remain alert to attempts to manipulate public opinion through ethnic, religious, or identity driven narratives. He encouraged them to question information, verify claims, and avoid being drawn into campaigns that encourage hatred or division.
He maintained that Nigeria’s future depends on unity, mutual respect, and a collective commitment to place national interest above personal or sectional considerations.
