Sony to End Disc Releases for New PlayStation Games

Zoyols News

Sony has announced that it will stop releasing new PlayStation video games on physical discs from January 2028, marking a major shift in how players will access future titles on the platform.

The company made this known on Wednesday through its official PlayStation blog, where it said all new games released after that date would be available only in digital format through the PlayStation Store and retail partners.

This means gamers will either download titles directly from Sony’s online store or receive digital download codes when purchasing games from retailers, rather than buying the traditional disc versions.

The decision follows years of steady movement toward digital gaming and comes at a time when consumer preference for downloadable content continues to outpace demand for physical copies.

Sony clarified that the change will not affect games that have already been released or titles scheduled to launch on disc before January 2028. Those games will still be available in physical format as planned.

The announcement has stirred fresh debate within the gaming community, especially as anticipation grows around the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI, which is expected to launch as a digital only title.

Some players have voiced concern over the future of physical game ownership, arguing that the disappearance of discs would hurt collectors and wipe out the second hand resale market for major titles.

Sony’s move toward a digital future did not begin now. The company had already signalled that direction in 2020 with the release of the PlayStation 5, which launched with a version that came without a disc drive.

Explaining the latest decision, Sony said it reflects changing consumer habits, noting that digital media has become the preferred choice for a large number of players. The company added that it remains committed to delivering a top quality gaming experience to fans.

Industry analysts say the shift was only a matter of time. Piers Harding Rolls of Ampere Analysis noted that when the PlayStation 4 launched in 2013, just 13 per cent of game sales were digital. By 2025, that figure had climbed to nearly 80 per cent.

Despite the trend, not everyone is pleased with the development. Some gamers described the decision as disappointing, while analysts said the concerns go beyond convenience and touch on issues such as game preservation, collecting and the ability to access older physical titles on future consoles.

Experts also believe the move could deal a blow to specialist game retailers and the second hand market, both of which have long depended on physical sales.

The development has also fuelled speculation about Sony’s next generation console. Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners said the announcement strongly suggests that the PlayStation 6 could launch as a fully digital console.

Harding Rolls shared a similar view, adding that Ampere Analysis currently expects the PlayStation 6 to arrive toward the end of 2028.
