Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have stepped up efforts to rebuild unity within the party as preparations gather momentum for the 2027 general elections.
The move comes after concerns and disagreements that followed the party’s nationwide primaries, prompting leaders to begin consultations aimed at strengthening internal cohesion before the next stage of the electioneering process.
Under the banner of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, the governors met with the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, to review the outcome of recent electoral activities and explore ways to address issues arising from the primaries.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, said discussions focused on the party’s primary elections across the country, the governorship election in Ekiti State and a number of recent bye elections.
He expressed satisfaction with the party’s performance in the elections reviewed, noting that the governors were encouraged by the results and remained optimistic about the APC’s chances in both the presidential and National Assembly elections in 2027.
Uzodimma explained that the meeting also produced a decision for governors to work more closely with the national leadership of the party in coordinating campaign plans and strengthening unity among members.
He added that the governors also examined wider governance issues and renewed their commitment to implementing policies that would improve the welfare of Nigerians under APC led administrations.
According to him, the forum remains determined to contribute to solving challenges affecting Nigeria’s democratic system while ensuring that citizens enjoy the benefits of good governance.
Governors from several APC controlled states attended the meeting, including those representing Lagos State, Kaduna State, Borno State, Gombe State, Kebbi State, Sokoto State, Kano State, Zamfara State, Taraba State, Ekiti State and Akwa Ibom State.
Zoyols News reports that the renewed reconciliation effort follows widespread complaints that trailed the APC primaries conducted in May. The exercise attracted allegations of irregularities, candidate imposition and manipulation of delegate lists in some states.
The controversies are also believed to have influenced the party leadership’s decision to delay the release of the complete list of successful candidates as consultations continued with aggrieved members in a bid to prevent further internal disputes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
