Why Super Eagles Stumbled: Inside the 3-0 Shock vs. Guinea-Bissau

Zoyols News
The Super Eagles of Nigeria endured a difficult outing on Tuesday, falling to a heavy 3-0 defeat against Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. Coming just days after a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in their opening fixture, high hopes had surrounded the squad as they stepped onto the pitch for this crucial encounter.
However, things quickly unraveled for the three-time African champions. The Djurtus took control of the tempo early on, stifling Nigeria’s midfield creativity and keeping the pressure on. The breakthrough arrived in the first half when Franculino Djú capitalized on a defensive lapse to fire the hosts ahead.
Zoyols News gathered that Guinea-Bissau maintained their momentum after the interval, refusing to let the Super Eagles settle into any rhythm. Mama Baldé soon doubled the advantage with a clinical finish, effectively putting the game out of reach, before Álvaro Djaló added a third deep into stoppage time to seal a memorable win for the home side.
Addressing journalists after the final whistle, head coach Eric Chelle made no attempts to sugarcoat the performance, freely admitting that his team had been completely outplayed.
“They were more aggressive than us; they were better than us,” Chelle remarked.
While stressing that he was not looking for excuses, the tactician pointed to external hurdles that hampered his players, including unfamiliarity with the turf and the intense weather conditions.
“Though this is not an excuse, they know their pitch. They usually play on this pitch, but for us, it was the first time, and the pitch was very bad. The weather was very hot too,” he explained.
The coach also highlighted a lack of staying power after the break, noting how a brief resurgence was quickly snuffed out.
“Guinea-Bissau entered the game more motivated and more aggressive. They put more intensity, and we never found a solution. We tried to go forward after halftime, to bring something new, but after 10 minutes, we stopped, and I don’t know why.”
With this stumble behind them, the Super Eagles will now face an urgent need to regroup and correct their defensive frailties ahead of their upcoming fixtures if they hope to steer their qualification campaign back on track.
