The Kano State Executive Council has approved projects and government commitments worth ₦144.005 billion, alongside a proposed ₦1.201 trillion supplementary budget for 2026.
The decisions were reached at the council’s 41st meeting held on Thursday, September 24, at the Malam Aminu Kano House, Government Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja, with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf presiding.
The approvals cover several areas, including roads and other infrastructure, education, healthcare, water supply, power, housing, human capital development, transportation, security and cultural development.
The Ministry of Works received the largest allocation, with ₦84.976 billion approved for road construction, rehabilitation, public buildings and other infrastructure projects across the state.
Among the major road projects is the reconstruction of the Rawul, Gani, Sitti, Masu and Gomo Road in Sumaila, estimated at ₦16.69 billion. The council also approved ₦8.65 billion for the Zaria Road, Gurjiya, Yankatsari, Rijiyar Gwangwan corridor.
Other infrastructure approvals include work on major urban roads and the Phase II perimeter fence and gate at Amana City, which is valued at ₦1.16 billion.
The health sector also received attention, with ₦2.609 billion approved for the rehabilitation and upgrading of healthcare facilities.
As part of the health projects, the Kibiya and Albasu Primary Healthcare Centres are to be upgraded to general hospitals at costs of about ₦521.9 million and ₦679.4 million respectively. Other projects include the renovation of Karaye Emirate Specialist Hospital and rehabilitation work at Shekar Barde Primary Healthcare Centre in Kumbotso.
The council also approved ₦2.408 billion for water resources, environmental and climate related projects. The amount includes funding for outstanding energy bills to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company and diesel supplies for water facilities.
Another ₦1.246 billion was approved for power and renewable energy projects, including electricity supply to the Tamburawa and Watari water treatment plants and the provision of generating sets and medium voltage panels for Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital.
Beyond infrastructure and public services, the council approved a public private partnership for the proposed Kano Energy and SME Industrial Park at the AKK Industrial Layout in Tamburawa.
It also approved the acquisition, in the overriding public interest, of Saymays Specialist Hospital in Gandun Albasa and a private property located near the Infectious Diseases Hospital and Abubakar Imam Urology Centre on France Road.
The council further approved ₦368.7 million for the establishment and equipping of a Women Skills Acquisition Centre at Kofar Ruwa, while ₦435 million was approved for operational vehicles for the State Hisbah Board.
Education also featured among the council’s priorities, with approvals covering school rehabilitation, facilities and other educational commitments. The wider set of decisions also includes programmes relating to human capital development and public services.
In a major budget decision, the council approved a ₦1.201 trillion 2026 Supplementary Budget and Amendment and directed that the proposal be forwarded to the Kano State House of Assembly for legislative consideration and approval.
The supplementary proposal comes after Kano’s original 2026 budget of ₦1.47 trillion was signed into law at the end of 2025.
The council also approved the hosting of KANFEST 2026, Kano’s annual arts and cultural festival, as part of efforts to promote the state’s cultural heritage, tourism and creative sector.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Works was directed to prepare a detailed Bill of Engineering Measurement and Evaluation for the Eastern Bypass, Tsamiya Babba, Larabawar Abasawa and Nera Roundabout section of Ringim Road for further consideration.
The latest decisions reflect the wide range of projects and programmes currently being considered by the Kano State Government as it reviews its 2026 spending plans and development priorities.
