Joao Felix struck from outside the box as Portugal began their UEFA Nations League title defence with a narrow 1 0 victory over Wales in Lisbon.
The reigning champions dominated much of the match, controlling possession and registering 19 attempts compared with Wales’ four. Despite creating several opportunities, Portugal had to settle for a single goal.
Felix broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when his low effort from the edge of the penalty area took a slight deflection off Wales captain Ben Davies. The change in direction sent the ball beyond goalkeeper Danny Ward and into the far corner.
Much of the attention before and during the game centred on Cristiano Ronaldo, who remains a major figure in Portugal’s attack. The 41 year old, who made his international debut in 2003, has scored a record 146 goals for his country.
Ronaldo came close on several occasions but could not find the net. He struck the side netting with one attempt before sending a promising volley over the bar from close range.
The veteran forward appeared to have finally scored after the hour mark when he turned the ball into the Wales net, only for the effort to be ruled offside. Ronaldo reacted with disbelief and was substituted seven minutes later.
Portugal’s attacking threat appeared to drop after his departure, allowing Wales to grow into the game and push for an equaliser.
Wales came extremely close when Brennan Johnson lifted the ball over goalkeeper Diogo Costa, only for the effort to strike the crossbar. With Costa beaten, Lewis Koumas and Dan James raced towards the rebound, but Koumas’ follow up lacked power and was cleared off the line by Portugal defender Ruben Dias.
The narrow victory gives Portugal a winning start as they begin their latest Nations League campaign, while Wales will look back on the missed opportunities that denied them a share of the points.
