Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has lauded both his team and the Super Eagles following a tense 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Nigeria in the AFCON 2025 semi-final at Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah, Rabat.
Regragui expressed gratitude to Moroccan fans, describing the triumph as a shared achievement built on dedication, unity, and sacrifice. “The messages of support we received were very touching and had a big impact on us. I am extremely proud of my players and our fans,” he said.
The semi-final ended goalless after regulation and extra time, testing both teams physically and mentally. Regragui admitted it was a demanding contest but said reaching the final on home soil made every effort worthwhile. “We suffered a lot. Playing extra time drained our energy, but reaching the final at home is a beautiful gift,” he noted.
In a show of sportsmanship, the Moroccan coach also praised Nigeria and their head coach, Eric Chelle, for a disciplined and strong performance. “I congratulate the Nigerian team and Coach Eric Chelle for the excellent work they’ve done,” Regragui added.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero of the night, saving penalties from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi, paving the way for Youssef En-Nesyri to score the decisive kick. Bounou credited teamwork and fan support for the victory. “The atmosphere was amazing. The match was tough, but the players delivered what was needed,” he said.
Named TotalEnergies Man of the Match, Bounou highlighted Regragui’s preparation and his teammates’ determination. “The coach prepared us perfectly, and everyone fought together. Our fans gave us extra motivation,” he added, noting the team’s focus would now shift to recovery and preparation ahead of the final. “We will recover, prepare well, and give our fans what they deserve,” he said.
Morocco will face Senegal in Sunday’s final as they chase a second AFCON title, 50 years after their first win in 1976.
