After several years away from the big screen, veteran Nollywood actor Charles Okafor, popularly known as “The Primate,” is set to make a major return in the highly anticipated action thriller, Issakaba: The Return.
The film, directed by renowned filmmaker Lancelot Imasuen, is scheduled to hit cinemas on Wednesday, November 11, bringing back an actor whose performances helped shape Nollywood during the 1990s and early 2000s.
Imasuen has described Okafor’s return as a special moment for the Nigerian film industry, highlighting the actor’s lasting influence, versatility and commanding presence on screen.
Announcing his comeback, the filmmaker said Okafor’s appearance on the movie’s promotional poster was a reminder of the remarkable legacy he has built over the years and his contribution to Nigerian storytelling.
According to Imasuen, Okafor represents more than just an accomplished actor, describing him as an institution and a symbol of excellence whose work has left a lasting impression on audiences across different generations.
“The Primate is not just an actor; he is an institution, a symbol of excellence and a distinguished custodian of a generation of Nigerian storytelling,” Imasuen said.
He added that seeing the veteran actor return in Issakaba: The Return brings together nostalgia and renewed excitement, proving that genuine talent remains relevant regardless of how long an actor stays away from the screen.
“His remarkable ability to bring characters to life, coupled with his unmistakable presence, has left an indelible impression on audiences across generations.
“Seeing him return in ‘Issakaba: The Return’ evokes nostalgia, excitement and admiration. It is a beautiful convergence of legacy and renewed relevance, a testament to the fact that genuine talent does not grow old, and true legends never go out of fashion. The legend returns, but the legacy never leaves!” he stated.
Okafor became widely recognised through several popular productions, including Computer Girls (2003), Sting (2006) and Ocean Deep (2007). His popularity and commanding performances made him one of the familiar faces of Nollywood during the industry’s early years.
His long absence from acting also generated speculation, with rumours suggesting that he had abandoned the film industry to concentrate on religious activities and winning souls for God.
However, the actor has explained that his decision to stay away from the screen was not because he had quit acting. Rather, he preferred to wait for quality productions instead of appearing in films simply for the sake of remaining active.
His return in Issakaba: The Return is therefore expected to reconnect him with longtime fans while introducing his talent to a new generation of movie lovers.
