The Delta State Government has set aside more than N2 billion to sponsor eligible Christian pilgrims travelling to Israel and Jordan in 2026.
Commissioner for Bureau of Special Duties Erijo Etacherure announced the funding in Asaba on Friday while briefing the state’s pilgrimage media head, Dr Latimore Oghenesivbe. He said the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission would begin screening applicants on November 11 at the Christian Association of Nigeria Secretariat in Asaba.
Those who collected application forms must complete and submit them to the Executive Secretary of the Delta State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board by November 9. Etacherure warned that late applications would not be considered at the screening venue. Applicants must also present valid ECOWAS international passports.
The commission will determine who qualifies for the programme, and its decisions will be final. Anyone who has previously taken part in a state government sponsored pilgrimage to Israel or Jordan is not eligible to apply, he said.
Successful applicants will receive full sponsorship, along with additional financial assistance to help them buy religious materials and modest gifts for their families.
Etacherure said the programme reflected Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to residents’ spiritual wellbeing. He described the pilgrimage as a chance for reflection and spiritual renewal, as well as an opportunity to learn more about the biblical places associated with the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.
Pilgrims will also pray for Nigeria, Delta State and their families during the journey. According to the commissioner, the experience could deepen their understanding of scripture and strengthen their faith, with benefits extending to their families, churches and communities.
He said the government hoped participants would return with stronger moral convictions and a greater appreciation for peace, compassion and tolerance. These values, he added, could support responsible citizenship and peaceful coexistence across the state.
Etacherure said the investment in spiritual tourism was part of the government’s wider human development strategy, alongside efforts to advance infrastructure and economic growth.
He also assured applicants that welfare arrangements were in place. The Delta medical team will work with the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission’s medical team to provide care throughout the pilgrimage.
The commissioner urged residents to pray for peace, unity and sustainable development, saying social progress depends on shared responsibility, moral discipline and commitment to the common good.
