Nollywood actor Kunle Afod has sparked widespread reactions after expressing frustration over the lack of emergency response services following a road accident he witnessed along the Ibadan to Sagamu Expressway.
In a video shared on social media, the actor revealed that he had spent about 20 minutes at the accident scene without seeing an ambulance or any emergency response team arrive to assist the victims.
Concerned about the situation, Afod said he and others at the scene had repeatedly tried contacting emergency services in Ogun State, but their efforts had produced no response.
He expressed shock that people involved in the crash were left helpless by the roadside, with no immediate assistance available to take them to safety or provide medical attention.
Describing the situation as deeply troubling, the actor questioned why emergency services had failed to respond despite several calls for help.
“It is a terrible accident we met on the way along the Ibadan to Sagamu Expressway. It is so sad that, for about 20 minutes, we have been here, and no ambulance or emergency service has come to help them.
“We have been trying to call emergency services to come and help them. See people lying down helplessly. Nobody in Ogun State has come to rescue them. Till now, we have been trying to make emergency calls, but nobody is trying to help at all. What is happening in this state?” he said.
The video triggered angry reactions from social media users, many of whom questioned the state of emergency response services in the country. Some also criticised the government for what they described as misplaced priorities, comparing the lack of emergency vehicles with the availability of buses used during political campaigns.
One user, adunni_gold, wrote, “Na campaign bus they can buy, no emergency bus. Shameful.”
Another commenter, b.blvck01, expressed disappointment over the situation, advising Nigerians to take their personal safety seriously because of the country’s poor emergency response system.
Others, including bizabethy and iyabeezevents, also questioned why campaign buses appeared more readily available than emergency vehicles.
Meanwhile, abdullateefshoyinka described the situation as another indication that Nigeria was not working, while larry_pdro04 and iyabeezevents questioned the country’s direction. Another user, dr_alwaysrozy, asked whether emergency ambulances were actually available in Nigeria.
Afod’s concern for people in difficult situations is not new. During his 51st birthday celebration last year, the actor spoke about the personal challenges he had faced, admitting that there was often pain behind his smiles and laughter. Despite his struggles, he said he remained committed to bringing happiness to others.
He has also built a reputation for supporting elderly and struggling veterans in the Nigerian film industry. Afod has repeatedly spoken about the joy he gets from helping those who paved the way for younger actors, describing it as part of the legacy he hopes to leave behind.
Over the years, his efforts to assist Nollywood veterans have earned him appreciation from many people within and outside the entertainment industry.
The actor has also experienced difficult moments in his personal life. In a previous fire incident involving his vehicle, Afod escaped death, but his driver and an elderly man who attempted to help reportedly suffered severe burns.
