Vice President Kashim Shettima is set to unveil Nigeria’s green transition roadmap before world leaders at the ongoing COP 30 summit in Belém, Brazil. The presentation aims to translate the country’s climate commitments into tangible investments, projects, and global partnerships.
Speaking to journalists at the event, the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, Tenioye Majekodunmi, described Nigeria’s participation as a major milestone in the country’s environmental journey. She noted that Nigeria remains the first West African nation to submit its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0), positioning it for significant investment opportunities at what she called the “implementation COP.”
Majekodunmi explained that Nigeria is approaching the summit with renewed momentum, having recently approved two key climate policy frameworks the National Carbon Market Framework and the operationalization of the National Climate Change Fund. She said these moves send a strong message to investors that Nigeria is open to credible carbon investments capable of driving real emission reductions and supporting local communities.
According to her, one of Nigeria’s key priorities at COP 30 is to move beyond policy declarations to practical execution. “We want to convert all the deliverables in our NDC 3.0 into viable projects and partnerships. This is where we begin to move from paper to projects,” she said.
Majekodunmi also highlighted Nigeria’s plans to strengthen South-South cooperation on climate issues, particularly through new forest dialogues linking the Amazon, Congo, and Guinea regions. She described this as a remarkable opportunity to learn from global forest protection initiatives and expand regional collaboration.
The Vice President’s spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, said Nigeria’s active presence at COP 30 underscores President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and the broader Sustainable Development Goals. He explained that Shettima’s presentation will center on Nigeria’s third Nationally Determined Contribution, which outlines clear pathways toward achieving a 32 percent emissions reduction by 2035 and net-zero emissions by 2060.
The theme for this year’s COP, “Climate Action and Implementation,” emphasizes practical climate adaptation strategies with special focus on forests, biodiversity, energy, agriculture, cities, and human development. Through this platform, Nigeria seeks to reaffirm its role as a regional leader in sustainable climate action and environmental innovation.
