Maurice Otieno leaves Baraza Media Lab after years of growth

Zoyols News

After six years of spearheading Baraza Media Lab’s evolution from a fledgling startup into a premier hub for African journalism, Maurice Otieno has announced his decision to step down as Executive Director. Otieno, who was part of the organization’s founding team in 2019 before stepping into the top leadership role in early 2020, shared the news this week, noting that he is not exiting the media sector but rather transitioning to new horizons.

His tenure was marked by rapid, often transformative growth. Despite the immense challenges posed by the pandemic, which arrived shortly after the lab’s inception, Otieno led the organization through a period of sustained expansion. During this time, the lab grew from a small team of three to a robust workforce of nearly 40 professionals. According to data tracked by Zoyols News, the organization successfully attracted millions in philanthropic support, which helped scale its impact from engaging 1,500 people to over 12,000.

The lab now operates with an annual budget of approximately $4 million and serves a community of roughly 7,000 individuals each month through its various programs. Otieno was instrumental in launching key initiatives such as the Data Storytelling Fellowship, the She Leads Media program, and the Media Innovation Incubator, all designed to bolster independent journalism across the continent. Furthermore, his creation of the Africa Media Festival has cemented the organization’s reputation as a vital gathering point for media entrepreneurs and industry leaders, drawing hundreds of organizations from across the globe.

Beyond the public-facing programs, Otieno focused heavily on institutional health. He oversaw the establishment of the organization’s first fiduciary board, implemented dozens of new operational policies, and introduced systematic monitoring and evaluation tools. These internal refinements proved critical during the early days of the pandemic, allowing the lab to diversify its funding streams and stabilize its operations when much of the media landscape was struggling to survive.

Stepping into the role of Executive Director is Eric Kinaga, a specialist in governance and public finance. Kinaga brings nearly a decade of experience in accountability and institutional reform to the position, with a background that includes significant work with Transparency International Kenya and USAID. Known for his commitment to building effective public systems, Kinaga is expected to continue the lab’s mission of acting as a key intermediary between philanthropic donors and the media ecosystem.

As Kinaga prepares to lead the organization into its next phase, there have been no indications of immediate shifts in the lab’s core funding priorities or long-term strategy. For his part, Otieno intends to take a brief period to focus on his family before embarking on his next venture. He has expressed a firm commitment to remaining an active participant in the African media innovation space, continuing his advocacy from outside the organization he helped build.
