D’Tigress Wraps Up WNBA Tour, Eyes 2026 World Cup Glory

Zoyols News

Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has officially wrapped up their high-profile preparatory tour in the United States. The tour concluded with a tough 57–105 loss against the Indiana Fever, marking the end of a three-game series against WNBA teams. While the scorelines were challenging, the primary goal of the trip was to test the squad’s readiness and fine-tune their tactics ahead of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

Throughout their time in the U.S., the African champions faced a steep learning curve against some of the world’s most elite athletes. Their journey began with an 89–63 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks, followed by a much tighter and more competitive performance against the Minnesota Lynx, which ended 88–79. The final heavy defeat in Indiana served as a stark reminder of the intensity required at the highest level of the sport.

Basketball analysts view this tour as a necessary baptism by fire. Playing against top-tier WNBA opposition provided the team with invaluable exposure that cannot be replicated in training camps. It highlighted specific gaps in the team’s play, offering a clear roadmap for what needs to be addressed before they head to the global stage.

The focus now shifts entirely to Germany, where the World Cup is set to take place from September 4 to 13, 2026. Nigeria, as the undisputed dominant force in African basketball, finds itself in a demanding Group B. They are scheduled to face off against France, South Korea, and Hungary. Each opponent brings a different challenge, from the raw power and European pedigree of the French side to the disciplined tactical organization of the Hungarians and the rapid pace of South Korea.

Head coach Rena Wakama and her staff are expected to dive deep into the data and footage from the WNBA tour to make necessary adjustments. The emphasis in the coming weeks will likely be on strengthening defensive structures and improving offensive execution under extreme pressure. Although the results on paper were not ideal, the coaching crew maintains that the experience is vital for building the mental and physical toughness needed to compete on the world stage.

As the countdown to Germany 2026 enters its final stages, there is a sense of renewed determination within the D’Tigress camp. The team is not just looking to participate; they are aiming to translate their continental success into a deep run in the tournament. By learning from these recent setbacks, Nigeria hopes to advance beyond the group stage and further solidify its reputation as a rising powerhouse in international women’s basketball.
