Eight Insurers Shut Down: How to Protect Your Claims

Zoyols News

A wave of anxiety has washed over thousands of Nigerians following the decision by the insurance industry regulator to revoke the operating licenses of eight insurance firms. These companies were shut down after failing to meet mandatory recapitalization requirements, a development that has left many policyholders scrambling to understand the fate of their investments, savings, and active insurance covers.

The affected firms include Staco Insurance, Goldlink Insurance, Universal Insurance, Nigerian Reinsurance Corporation, NICON Insurance, African Alliance Insurance, Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation, and Royal Exchange Prudential Life. While the sudden closure has understandably sparked fear, particularly among those with long-term life policies and annuity contracts, experts suggest there is a formal process for recovery that customers can follow.

The regulatory body has already commenced the handover of these defunct entities to liquidators. These appointed officials are tasked with taking control of the companies’ assets and liabilities to facilitate the settlement of legitimate claims. It is important for policyholders to understand that while their insurer has ceased operations, their valid claims remain legal liabilities that the liquidation process is designed to address.

For those holding general insurance policies such as motor or property coverage, the immediate reality is that these policies no longer offer protection. These customers should urgently seek alternative coverage from licensed operators to avoid being exposed to risk. For life insurance holders, the process is more detailed as it involves long-term savings, maturity benefits, and death benefits. The liquidator will evaluate each policy based on its specific terms and the assets available for distribution.

To navigate this period, affected individuals should begin gathering all relevant documentation, including policy certificates, premium payment receipts, and any previous correspondence with the insurer. It is vital to submit these to the appointed liquidator as soon as the official process is clarified. Maintaining copies of all submitted documents and obtaining acknowledgments of receipt is essential to ensuring a claim is properly tracked.

Zoyols News warns that customers must remain vigilant against potential fraud. Policyholders should avoid making any payments to the former companies unless they are explicitly authorized by the regulator or the liquidator. Furthermore, beware of individuals claiming to be intermediaries or agents who might demand fees to fast-track claims processing. All information regarding settlements should be verified solely through official regulatory channels.

Ultimately, the recovery of funds will depend on the value of the assets the liquidators are able to recover and the volume of verified claims against each firm. While immediate or full payment is not guaranteed for every case, the law provides a priority structure for settling these obligations. Affected customers are encouraged to stay informed through official updates rather than relying on unverified social media chatter, and to act promptly to secure their interests.
