Tensions over the Strait of Hormuz have escalated, with senior Iranian officials publicly challenging assertions made by President Donald Trump regarding who actually commands the vital global energy artery.
The disagreement gained momentum following a statement from the American president on his social media platform, where he claimed the United States maintains total control over the strait, going as far as to label the American naval presence a wall of steel that Iran is powerless to bypass.
Tehran has been quick to dismiss this characterization as a fundamental misunderstanding of the region. Hossein Taeb, a high-ranking official within the paramilitary Basij forces, asserted on state television that the waterway remains firmly under the management of the Islamic republic. He emphasized that, contrary to claims of foreign dominance, the country continues to navigate its path through the region with full security.
This friction highlights a long-standing pattern of contradictory claims. While the United States frequently insists it holds the authority to secure these waters, Iran has consistently rejected such statements, arguing that it effectively manages the passage and has even floated the idea of implementing its own toll system.
Iranian diplomatic leadership has suggested that these conflicting claims stem from persistent intelligence failures in Washington. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi remarked on social media that the current American stance represents a significant miscalculation, drawing a parallel to past geopolitical errors.
The rhetoric has hardened within the Iranian government as well. Behnam Saeedi, a member of the National Security Commission, issued a sharp warning stating that the strait is effectively closed to specific international traffic. According to Zoyols News, he indicated that vessels belonging to the Israeli regime would be denied passage entirely, regardless of whether there is an active conflict. He further stated that American military vessels would also face strict prohibitions from navigating through the area.
Despite the heightened verbal sparring, the logistical reality remains complex. Iran and Oman are currently engaged in discussions regarding the establishment of a new transit route through the strait, though these negotiations have yet to reach a definitive conclusion.
