At 28, Leavitt is shifting her focus entirely toward her family. She returned to the podium only recently, having given birth to her second child, Viviana, back in May. Between the demands of a high-stakes government role and raising her two-year-old son, she found the balance increasingly difficult to maintain.
Karoline Leavitt opened up about the personal struggle behind the move. She expressed that she simply couldn’t be the mother her two young children deserve while pouring the necessary, around-the-clock energy into the role of press secretary. It was a choice made from the heart, opting to prioritize her children over the relentless pace of the White House briefing room.
President Trump has not yet named a successor for the role. Instead, he made it clear he fully supports her decision and expects to keep her closely involved in his inner circle. In his own statement, he noted that Leavitt will transition into a role as one of his top outside advisors, where she will continue to be a significant voice for the Republican Party as they prepare for the upcoming midterm elections.
Leavitt’s path to the briefing room has been diverse. Before this appointment, she served as a spokesperson for the pro-Trump super PAC, MAGA Inc., and was a core part of his 2024 presidential campaign. Her political background also includes a run for a New Hampshire congressional seat in 2022, where she navigated a crowded Republican primary before the general election. Her experience in Washington runs deeper, however, as she also held a position in the White House press office during Trump’s first term and served as communications director for Representative Elise Stefanik.
Her tenure as press secretary was distinct in its approach. Rather than relying on the traditional, formal daily briefings that characterized past administrations—like those of Sean Spicer or Kayleigh McEnany—Leavitt focused heavily on promoting the administration’s agenda through appearances on conservative media outlets. This strategy aligned with President Trump’s own style of engaging directly with the press during official events and travel, often leaving her to act as a primary defender of the administration’s policies against critics.
