Peter Obi Branded ‘Candidate of Conscience’ as Campaigns Begin

Zoyols News

As presidential campaigns for the 2027 general elections officially begin, the media office of Peter Obi has presented the former Anambra State governor as the “Candidate of Conscience,” urging Nigerians to carefully examine the records, ideas and character of all the presidential contenders.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the spokesman of the Peter Obi Media Office, Idris Zekeri, the group described the commencement of campaigns as an important moment for the country’s democratic journey.

The media office said the 2026 Electoral Act provides for the commencement of campaigns ahead of the January 2027 presidential election, giving candidates a 150 day period to present their programmes and seek the support of voters.

According to the statement, the coming months should be more than a competition for political power, as the election will also determine the direction Nigeria takes in the years ahead.

The group portrayed the contest as a choice between what it described as the old pattern of waste, division and unfulfilled promises and a different approach built around competence, accountability, productivity and hope.

It said Obi’s campaign would focus on moving Nigeria from consumption to production, cutting the cost of governance, improving education and healthcare, strengthening national security and creating more opportunities for young people.

The media office also highlighted Obi’s public image as a politician associated with prudence, fiscal discipline and accountability. It said his approach to leadership is based on the belief that government resources should be managed for the benefit of citizens rather than political interests.

The statement urged Nigerians not to support any candidate simply because of ethnicity, religion, regional affiliation or political connections. Instead, voters were encouraged to assess the contenders based on their records, competence, ideas, character and ability to deliver measurable results.

According to the group, Obi believes leadership should be driven by competence, capacity, character, compassion and commitment, rather than political entitlement or identity.

The media office said the 150 day campaign period would expose Nigerians to numerous promises, rallies, slogans, debates and policy proposals. It therefore challenged citizens to look beyond campaign rhetoric and ask which candidate has the ability and integrity required to tackle economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and institutional weaknesses.

It said Obi’s proposed approach is centred on rebuilding trust between government and citizens, reducing the cost of governance, promoting transparency, investing in productive sectors and ensuring that public resources are used for the public good.

The group further argued that public office should be viewed as an opportunity to serve rather than a means of personal enrichment, adding that leadership should bring Nigerians together instead of deepening existing divisions.

It also pointed to Obi’s record as governor of Anambra State, where he has consistently presented himself as a careful manager of public resources, with emphasis on areas including education, healthcare and infrastructure.

The media office said Nigerians should use the campaign period to scrutinise the records and policy proposals of every candidate before making their choice.

“Democracy is strongest when citizens make informed choices based on facts rather than fear or primordial sentiment,” the statement said.

As campaigns begin, the Peter Obi Media Office maintained that the former Anambra governor is seeking the presidency on the strength of his record, ideas and character rather than ethnicity, religion or political connections.

Zoyols News reports that the 2027 presidential campaign season officially begins with candidates expected to take their messages to voters across the country ahead of the January 16, 2027 election.
