The US President announced what he called the strongest economic measures ever taken against any nation, describing it as economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale. In a post, he warned that any country whose banks, businesses, airports or government bodies offer any support or lifeline to Iran will face significant economic consequences.
The announcement comes as fighting in the region enters its sixth month with no clear end in sight. It also follows recent comments from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent about plans to cut Iran off economically like never before.
Iran has continued to block shipping through the Strait of Hormuz even after a short lull in missile strikes, following the collapse of a proposed deal to reopen the key waterway. While messages have reportedly been passed between the sides in recent days, Trump said on Tuesday that talks were off and floated the idea of the strait becoming a new US territory.
No specific penalties for third countries were detailed, and only Iran was named in the statement.
