Kimpact Development Initiative has called on INEC and other stakeholders to fix lingering problems from the Osun governorship election ahead of 2027. In its post-election report released in Abuja, the group said the poll exposed weaknesses in technology, communication and result management that could undermine the next general elections if not addressed.
KDI urged INEC to improve BVAS performance on election day, noting that elderly voters struggled the most with fingerprint and facial recognition. It warned that the 15.1 percent failure rate recorded in Osun could disenfranchise many voters if repeated nationwide in 2027.
The organisation also faulted INEC’s handling of the IReV portal, where result uploads paused for over two hours without any official explanation. It said clear and timely communication during such interruptions is necessary to reduce anxiety and misinformation.
KDI further advised INEC to clarify how electronic result forms are validated under the new Electoral Act and called on security agencies to strengthen early-warning systems for political tensions. It noted that while the Osun poll was largely peaceful, credible elections require more than the absence of violence.
