A non-denominational group, the Christian Conscience, has urged politicians to stick strictly to issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.
The group warned against the use of ethnic and religious sentiments, stressing that campaigns should focus on how candidates plan to improve education, healthcare, security, jobs, and the economy. It described campaigns laced with insults, ethnic division, or religious rhetoric as dangerous and unacceptable.
In a statement signed by its leaders, the group said political disagreement must never be allowed to turn into hatred. It also appealed to candidates and their supporters to reject violence, intimidation, and the use of thugs throughout the campaign period.
The group further advised Nigerians to judge candidates based on their records, policies, and competence rather than tribal or religious affiliations. It emphasized that peaceful political participation remains key to credible elections and national stability.
Separately, the National Broadcasting Commission recently cautioned broadcasters, online publishers, and bloggers against spreading misinformation, hate speech, or inflammatory content capable of undermining peaceful elections.
