D’Tigers draw Cameroon, Tunisia in 2027 World Cup path

Zoyols News

Nigeria’s D’Tigers walk into a demanding stretch of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers as the second round gathers 12 of the continent’s strongest sides, with five places at the tournament in Qatar still open.

The round splits those nations into Group E and Group F. The fourth qualifying window runs from 24 August to 1 September 2026. Nigeria sit in Group E with Cameroon, South Sudan, Guinea, Tunisia and Cape Verde, and the group’s matches will be staged in Radès, Tunisia.

The Super Eagles of the court open against Cameroon on 27 August, meet South Sudan the next day, and close the window against Cape Verde on 30 August. That same first day Guinea play South Sudan while Tunisia face Cape Verde. On 28 August Cameroon take on Tunisia and Cape Verde meet Guinea. The last day of the window pairs Guinea with Cameroon and Tunisia with South Sudan.

David Fizdale leads the side, with Dan Craig, Quinton Crawford, Deji Akindele and Dapo Adegbile on the bench. Nigeria travel with a 12-man roster that includes NBA guard Josh Okogie, Chimezie Metu and Chima Moneke, together with Caleb Agada, Stan Okoye, Ike Nwamu, Udoka Azubuike, Efe Abogidi, Ebuka Izundu, Manny Obaseki, Jordan Ogundiran and Paul Dibal.

History offers mixed comfort. The D’Tigers have met Cameroon four times and won three. Against South Sudan they are unbeaten in two meetings. Cape Verde have been a different story: six meetings, only one Nigerian win, so the last game of the window carries extra weight.

Group F will be played in Dakar, Senegal, and includes Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt and Mali. After August the race continues into a final phase in February 2027. The top two from each group and the best third-placed side will go through to the World Cup in Qatar.

For now the task is simple and hard at once: three games in a tight window, a chance to bank results against Cameroon and South Sudan, and a chance to rewrite a poor record against Cape Verde. Get that right and Nigeria stay in the hunt for basketball’s biggest stage.
