Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, took a significant step toward securing a place at the global showpiece on Saturday with a commanding 2-0 victory over Malawi. Playing the first leg of their final World Cup qualifying round in Ikenne-Remo, the Nigerian side displayed a level of dominance that underscored their status as a powerhouse in age-grade women’s football.
The Falconets have been a constant fixture at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup since its inception in 2002, and this latest performance suggests that tradition is set to continue. However, the victory was a testament to patience as much as skill. Despite controlling the tempo from the opening whistle and pinning Malawi’s ‘Young Scorchers’ deep into their own half, Nigeria found it difficult to break the deadlock during the first period. Much of the credit for the scoreless first half went to Malawian goalkeeper Emily Nkhwazi, whose heroics kept the hosts at bay despite a flurry of clear-cut chances.
According to match reports from Zoyols News, a tactical shift during the halftime break proved to be the turning point. Coach Moses Adukwu seemingly urged his side to play with more urgency and directness, and the rewards came almost immediately after the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, a dangerous ball whipped into the Malawian box caused enough confusion to force defender Maureen Kenneth into an own goal, finally giving Nigeria the lead they had worked so hard to earn.
With the momentum firmly in their favor, the Falconets doubled their advantage ten minutes later. In a beautifully executed attacking move, Faridat Abdulwahab turned provider, delivering a perfect pass to Kindness Ifeanyi. Ifeanyi showed great composure to slot the ball home, effectively doubling the lead and giving the home crowd plenty to cheer about. While Malawi attempted to find a way back into the game late on, the Nigerian defense remained disciplined and organized until the final whistle.
Beyond the tactical success, the team’s performance also came with a significant financial boost. Hon. Kunle Soname, the President of Remo Stars FC and Beyond Limits Football Academy, rewarded the players with 1 million Naira. Having promised 500,000 Naira for every goal scored, Soname followed through on his commitment to motivate the young squad as they represent the nation.
The attention of the technical crew now shifts to the return leg, where the Falconets will look to protect their two-goal cushion. The second leg is set to take place at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday, May 9, 2026. With the kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. Nigerian time, the Falconets remain the favorites to finish the job and officially book their flight to the World Cup.
