Abia State stood still on Thursday as family members, government officials, colleagues, and admirers gathered in Ujari, Arochukwu Local Government Area, to bid a final farewell to celebrated Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo.
The late actor, whose full name was Alex Ikenna Ekubo Okwaraeke, passed away at the age of 40 after a battle with advanced kidney cancer. His burial drew an impressive gathering of personalities from the entertainment industry and other sectors, reflecting the lasting influence he had on countless lives throughout his career.
Representing Governor Alex Otti at the funeral, the Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, described the late actor as a worthy ambassador who proudly showcased the rich culture and talent of Abia State and Nigeria through his achievements in Nollywood.
Speaking during the ceremony, Ajagba said Ekubo’s death was a painful loss that extended beyond his immediate family, touching the hearts of colleagues, fans, and everyone who admired his remarkable talent and dedication.
He noted that the news of the actor’s passing came as a huge shock, adding that the gathering was not only to mourn a gifted entertainer but also to celebrate a creative icon, a cultural ambassador, and a proud son of Arochukwu whose work brought honour to both Abia State and the nation.
According to him, Alexx Ekubo represented the determination, resilience, and creativity of many young people in Abia, inspiring others to pursue excellence and remain committed to their dreams. He also praised the actor’s courage and unwavering faith throughout his illness, expressing confidence that his contributions to Nollywood and African cinema would remain unforgettable.
During the funeral service, the Lead Pastor of Streams of Joy International, Umuahia, Pastor Eno Jerry Eze, encouraged mourners to reflect on the quality of a person’s life rather than the number of years they lived.
He urged the bereaved family and friends to find comfort in the positive legacy Ekubo left behind, reminding them that true greatness is measured by the impact made on others through kindness, service, and purpose.
The emotional farewell also witnessed touching tributes from several Nollywood stars who had worked closely with the late actor over the years.
Actress Joyce Kanu described him as a cheerful, caring, and dependable colleague whose sudden death left many in the film industry heartbroken.
Actor Stan Nze said the loss served as a powerful reminder of life’s uncertainty. He expressed regret that he did not have more opportunities to share movie sets with Ekubo, while praying for strength for everyone grieving the painful loss.
Actress Oluchi Chiana, popularly known as Stainless, also paid tribute, describing the late actor as humble, generous, and always willing to encourage younger actors and actresses striving to build their careers.
She said his kind heart and supportive nature made him someone who would always be remembered with affection, adding that his passing had left the entertainment industry deeply saddened.
Alexx Ekubo built an outstanding career through several successful Nollywood productions, earning widespread recognition for his professionalism, versatility, and commanding presence on screen. Over the years, he became one of the industry’s most admired and respected actors.
Among those present at the burial were Nollywood stars Ini Edo and Omoni Oboli, socialite Pretty Mike, businessman Obinna Iyiegbu, former President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, as well as officials of the Abia State Government.
Their presence reflected the immense respect and admiration the late actor commanded across different walks of life. As family, friends, colleagues, and admirers paid their final respects, heartfelt tributes continued to celebrate a remarkable life whose legacy will remain deeply rooted in Nollywood and beyond.
