Former Director General of the National Orientation Agency, Mike Omeri, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party candidate for the Nasarawa South Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general election.
Omeri secured the PDP ticket through a consensus arrangement that was later affirmed by delegates during the party’s senatorial primary held on Thursday.
Announcing the outcome of the exercise, the returning officer, Atsiya Amehmara, explained that other aspirants in the race had agreed to step down for Omeri before the affirmation process began.
According to him, although party stakeholders informed him about the consensus agreement earlier, he still sought confirmation from delegates before officially declaring Omeri as the party’s candidate.
He stated that after the delegates openly affirmed the arrangement, Omeri remained the sole aspirant and was subsequently declared winner through affirmation.
Reacting after his emergence, Mike Omeri expressed gratitude to party members and delegates across the zone for unanimously endorsing him to represent the district.
The former NOA boss said he understands the responsibilities that come with serving in the National Assembly and promised to represent the interests and aspirations of the people effectively if elected in 2027.
According to him, leadership is about carrying the voice of the people to the nation and bringing the benefits of governance back to the communities.
Omeri also appealed to aspirants who stepped aside for him to work together with him in strengthening the party and pursuing collective goals for the development of the senatorial district.
He noted that politics should not create division among party members, stressing that everyone involved in the process remains part of one political family.
“In every contest, some people win while others lose, but everyone remains part of the same team,” he said.
He praised those who willingly stepped down in support of his ambition, promising to work with them closely in moving the party forward and achieving shared objectives.
Omeri further expressed confidence that the PDP would emerge victorious in the 2027 election, adding that the endorsement he received from both the party and delegates has strengthened his resolve to serve the people.
He assured supporters that no community would be neglected if elected, promising to focus on empowerment, development, and economic growth across the district.
The PDP candidate also urged residents and supporters to remain peaceful and stay committed to mobilising support for the party ahead of the general election.
According to him, distractions and political disagreements should not weaken the shared desire for progress and better governance in Nasarawa South.
Speaking after the primary, the Nasarawa State PDP Chairman, Joel Daniel Gimba, described the party as one united family capable of resolving issues through understanding and consensus.
He explained that party elders carefully assessed all aspirants before settling for Omeri as the consensus candidate for the senatorial district.
Gimba also pointed to the large turnout of party members during the primary as a sign of the PDP’s growing strength in the state ahead of the next election cycle.
The party chairman expressed confidence that the PDP is prepared to challenge the ruling party in Nasarawa State and deliver what he described as prosperity and better governance to the people.
He also dismissed claims of division within the party, insisting that the PDP remains united and continues to operate in line with electoral regulations under the watch of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
