Ondo State is working with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to curb drug and substance abuse, with a focus on young people.
The plan includes awareness campaigns, community outreach, early intervention and prevention programmes across the state’s 18 local government areas. The partnership was discussed at a meeting between Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s Special Assistant on Youth and Social Inclusion, Henry Okunomo, and NDLEA officials led by the state commander, Folayemi Adeyemo Gabriel.
The two sides plan to take drug prevention messages to schools, communities, youth groups and other institutions, while promoting healthy lifestyles and helping people access support.
Prevention information and referral services are also expected to become part of the proposed Ondo State Youth Call Centre. The centre is intended to give young people a place to seek information, raise concerns, share feedback and learn about government opportunities and support services.
Okunomo said drug abuse threatens young people’s futures and the wider development of society. He said his office would work with the NDLEA and other agencies to help young people stay informed, protected and engaged in productive activities.
The state government said the collaboration reflects its wider focus on youth development, social inclusion and public safety.
