Sokoto Police urge vigilance ahead of Eid-el-Fitr celebrations

Zoyols

As the Muslim faithful across the country prepare for the upcoming Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, the Sokoto State Police Command has reached out to the public with a critical security advisory. This call for heightened vigilance comes at a time when security agencies are working doubly hard to stay ahead of potential threats that often surface during major festive periods.

The command’s spokesperson, Ahmad Rufa’i, explained in a recent statement that this proactive measure is essential for a peaceful holiday. Given the current security climate in parts of the state and the wider North-West, the police are particularly concerned about criminal elements who might try to exploit the busy atmosphere of the Sallah festivities.

The Commissioner of Police in Sokoto, Ahmed Musa, has already hit the ground running with a series of tactical directives. All Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and specialized units have been ordered to scale up patrols and lean heavily on intelligence-led operations. The goal is to create a visible security presence that discourages any attempt to break the law before, during, or after the celebrations.

Beyond large-scale security concerns, the police are also keeping a close eye on urban crimes that tend to spike during public gatherings. These include petty theft, pickpocketing, and phone snatching, which can quickly ruin the festive mood for unsuspecting citizens. To counter this, residents are being urged to stay alert in crowded areas and look out for one another.

Families have a role to play as well, with the command advising parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their children. The police highlighted the need to prevent younger ones from getting caught up in reckless behaviors or unlawful activities that sometimes occur during high-spirited celebrations.

Effective policing, however, is not a one-way street. The command emphasized that the safety of the state depends heavily on the cooperation of its people. Timely and credible information from the public is often the most effective tool the police have in preventing crime. Consequently, citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious movements or unusual activities to the nearest station or via the command’s emergency lines without delay.

To ensure a seamless response, the Sokoto Police have strengthened their collaboration with other security agencies, community leaders, and local stakeholders. With a large number of operatives already deployed across strategic locations, the command is reassuring everyone that they are fully prepared to respond swiftly to any emergencies, allowing residents to celebrate with a genuine sense of peace and security.
