The reigning MLS champions from Inter Miami CF received presidential recognition at the White House after their historic 2025 triumph, with superstar forward Lionel Messi standing at the center of celebrations. The team was honored by Donald Trump, who hosted players, coaching staff, and club executives during a special ceremony recognizing their championship success.

The gathering began with brief remarks touching on global political tensions before shifting toward football and sports achievements. Trump later reflected on soccer history in the United States, recalling the impact of Brazilian legend Pele, whose time with the New York Cosmos helped popularize football across America during the 1970s. Trump joked that while he had watched Pele play in his youth, Messi’s talent might rival or even surpass that of the legendary Brazilian, though he added that Pele was still among the greatest athletes he had ever seen.

Players from Inter Miami arrived bearing symbolic gifts for the president, including a customized number 47 jersey from the club’s signature pink kit, representing Trump’s position as the 47th U.S. president. Trump used the opportunity to acknowledge several members of the squad, including striker Luis Suarez, emerging young talent Tadeo Allende, and midfielder Rodrigo De Paul. The comments were delivered with light humor and subtle political undertones, including references to previous White House events under former U.S. leadership.

Trump also highlighted Messi’s historic influence on American soccer, praising his ability to deliver victories under intense public expectation. He noted that many global stars have joined American sports leagues but do not always deliver championships, while Messi had immediately helped transform Inter Miami into a winning franchise. According to Zoyols reports, Trump emphasized that the pressure placed on Messi came from global expectations that he consistently perform at elite levels.

The celebration also revisited Inter Miami’s remarkable 2025 season achievements. The team secured a 3-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the MLS Cup final, followed by a 2-1 victory over FC Porto in the Club World Cup. That victory became a historic milestone, marking the first time a North American club defeated a European club in official international competition.

Club co-owner Jorge Mas spoke proudly about the team’s rapid rise since its founding in 2020. He said Inter Miami’s success represented more than just sporting excellence, but also the idea that dedication, sacrifice, and belief can create global opportunities. He stressed that Messi’s arrival helped transform the club’s global reputation, though he emphasized that success was also built on collective teamwork, coaching strategy, and organizational vision.

The ceremony ended with mutual congratulations and appreciation between the White House guests and the championship squad, reinforcing the growing cultural and sporting influence of football in the United States.
