The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Mr. Adekimi Ojo, has confirmed the arrest of 42 illegal miners in connection with the recent abduction of the traditional ruler of Olayinka community, Oba Salman Olatunji Aweda. The monarch was reportedly seized from his palace in the Ifelodun local government area on Saturday evening by a group of ten heavily armed men.
The abduction appears to have been motivated by a financial transaction that took place earlier that day. The Police Commissioner revealed that the kidnappers broke into the palace and specifically demanded the money the monarch had received as royalty payments from the miners. Although the Oba complied and handed over the funds immediately, the gunmen still forced him away, along with his brother who was present at the time.
The investigation took a dramatic turn when the monarch’s brother was found tied to a tree. It was reported that during the journey into the wilderness, the brother, who was barefoot, became exhausted and refused to walk any further. He reportedly told his captors to end his life rather than force him to continue. Instead of killing him, the abductors tied him up and proceeded further into the forest with the monarch.
In response to the crisis, the police utilized drones and other advanced logistics to scan the area, leading to the mass arrest of 42 illegal miners within the community. While these suspects are currently being held at the police headquarters in Ilorin, Commissioner Ojo noted that it is still unclear if the actual kidnappers are among those in custody. Meanwhile, reports from the community suggest that the kidnappers have already made contact, demanding a staggering 400 million Naira for the ruler’s release.
The Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf, has expressed deep concern over the incident, which has sparked fresh fears regarding the security situation in Kwara South. During a meeting with unsettled residents, the chairman described the event as highly unfortunate and assured the public that the local government is working hand-in-hand with various security agencies to ensure a safe rescue.
A massive search operation is currently underway, involving a combined team of police officers, forest guards, and local vigilantes who are combing the surrounding thickets. Chairman Yusuf has called on the people of Olayinka to remain calm and cooperative, emphasizing that information from the community is vital to restoring peace. He further reassured residents that the state administration remains fully committed to their safety and is doing everything necessary to bring the monarch back home.
