Algeria boosted its chances of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after coming from behind to defeat Jordan 2 to 1 in a crucial Group J encounter.
The exciting match, played at Levi’s Stadium in California’s San Francisco Bay Area, saw the North African side recover from an early setback to claim all three points and remain firmly in contention for a place in the Round of 32.
Jordan struck first in the 36th minute through Nizar Al Rashdan and held onto the advantage for much of the game, putting Algeria under pressure.
Algeria eventually found a way back into the contest in the 69th minute when Nadhir Benbouali scored the equaliser to spark the comeback.
With momentum on their side, the Algerians completed the turnaround in the 82nd minute as Amine Gouiri found the back of the net to seal a hard fought victory.
The result lifts Algeria to three points from two matches, placing them level with Austria in the race for qualification to the knockout stage.
Argentina have already secured their place in the Round of 32 after winning their opening two group matches to collect the maximum six points.
The remaining qualification places from Group J will now be decided in the final round of group stage fixtures, with Algeria and Austria tied on three points, while Jordan also remains in contention for a place in the next round.
