The 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards transformed the Eko Hotel into a vibrant gallery of African couture, where the red carpet served as much as a stage for technical innovation as it did for film. This year, the focus shifted toward high-concept wearable art, with leading women in the industry trading traditional silhouettes for architectural structures and intricate botanical designs. The 2026 showcase proved that for African actresses and style icons, fashion is not just an accessory to the evening but a powerful medium for creative storytelling.
Osas Ighodaro was among the first to set a high bar for the night, making a bold statement in two distinct custom creations by Veekee James. Her first appearance featured a striking red sculptural column gown, defined by a towering collar constructed from horizontal bands edged in crystals. She later pivoted to a metallic silver ball gown that leaned into avant-garde territory, featuring a bodice heavy with crystal work and a voluminous skirt famously crafted from hundreds of metal sponges.
International style sensation Nana Akua Addo treated the event like her own private exhibition, unveiling three separate looks that pushed the boundaries of traditional dressmaking. She began the evening in a gown inspired by Gothic cathedral architecture before transitioning into a “Living Stone” mermaid dress. The latter featured layered fragments of textured material that mimicked the raw aesthetics of geological formations. She eventually rounded out her fashion marathon with a spiral fish-scale gown, accessorized with a matching beaded bag to complete the aquatic theme.
Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, who would eventually walk away with two major awards, chose a look that mirrored her career-defining night. She arrived in an emerald green gown with a liquid-metal finish that shimmered under the house lights. The centerpiece of her outfit was a lush botanical arrangement at the neckline, featuring 3D floral appliqués, beaded fringes, and delicate miniature butterflies. A branch-like extension reached up from her shoulder, creating a natural, forest-like frame around her face that stood out as one of the most detailed craftsmanship pieces of the evening.
The 2026 red carpet ultimately signaled a shift toward more complex, structured fashion. While the AMVCA is fundamentally a celebration of excellence in film and television, the level of ambition displayed by these women showed a deep respect for the occasion. By blending geological textures with traditional tailoring and botanical art, they ensured that the conversation surrounding African creativity remained as much about what was worn as it was about the trophies won.
