The Anambra State Government has officially cleared Ken Emeakayi, the Special Adviser on Security to the Governor, following an internal investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct. These claims, which were brought forward by prominent human rights lawyer Professor Chidi Odinkalu, suggested an inappropriate relationship between Emeakayi and Mrs. Mmasi Nwangwu. Mrs. Nwangwu is the wife of the detained native doctor popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwaraki, and the accusations had sparked intense public scrutiny regarding the motives behind her husband’s ongoing legal troubles.
A fact-finding panel, led by the state’s Attorney-General, Tobechukwu Nweke, and composed of senior legal experts from the Ministry of Justice, concluded its work earlier this week. According to a statement released by Mazi Ejimofor Opara, the governor’s media aide, the committee found no evidence to support the claims. Information gathered by Reports indicates that the panel interviewed all key parties, including Emeakayi, Mrs. Nwangwu, and the legal team representing her husband, before determining that no improper connection existed.
The state government pointed out that Professor Odinkalu was given several opportunities to present his evidence, either in person or virtually, but he reportedly declined to participate in the inquiry. The administration maintains that the investigative process was thorough and transparent, ultimately dismissing the allegations as unfounded and lacking any factual basis.
However, the conclusion of the government panel has done little to quiet the controversy. Professor Odinkalu has openly rejected the findings, labeling the entire exercise a poorly handled cover-up. In a series of social media posts, he argued that his original claims remain valid and dismissed the inquiry as a “whitewash” intended to protect a high-ranking official. He expressed disappointment in the government’s approach, suggesting that the attempt to move past the scandal would ultimately fail to convince the public.
One of the major points of contention for Odinkalu was the informal nature of the communication he received. He noted that the only invitations sent to him came via WhatsApp messages, which he argued lacked the professional standards expected of an official legal inquiry. He criticized the Attorney-General’s office for failing to provide clear terms of reference or a formal outline of the panel’s mandate. Despite the government’s decision to publicly clear Emeakayi, Odinkalu has made it clear that he stands by his allegations and has no intention of retreating from his position.
