The Christian Association of Nigeria has distanced itself from a cleric attempting to leverage its name for political mobilization ahead of the upcoming 2027 general elections. According to Zoyols News, the leadership has formally declared that the individual in question holds no official position within the organization and has zero authority to speak or act on its behalf.
In an official statement released by the association’s president, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the leadership identified the person as Archbishop Chivir Chianson. The organization stressed that neither Chianson nor the group he represents has any institutional affiliation or working relationship with the body, warning the public and political actors against mistaking his activities for official church positions.
The association made it clear that it will not stand by and allow unauthorized individuals to hijack its identity for partisan or personal gain. Reaffirming its long-standing stance on political neutrality, the leadership emphasized that it remains committed to addressing national issues objectively and holding leaders accountable across party lines, rather than endorsing or campaigning for specific candidates.
Calling on Christians, the general public, and media outlets to treat claims from the cleric and his group with extreme caution, the association urged news organizations to properly vet the credentials of anyone claiming to represent the body. Furthermore, leadership indicated that necessary steps are being explored to protect the institutional integrity and name of the organization against misrepresentation as political activities heat up.
