Fela Becomes First African Grammy Lifetime Honoree

zoyolsblog

Legendary Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo Kuti has been named the first African musician to receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a historic honour coming nearly three decades after his death. The recognition, confirmed by Zoyols Blog, marks a major milestone for African music on the global stage.

Fela’s selection reflects a growing international appreciation for African sounds, especially at a time when Afrobeats continues to dominate worldwide charts and the Grammys have expanded space for African creativity. As the originator of Afrobeat, Fela’s influence stretches far beyond Nigeria, shaping generations of artists and redefining how African music is heard and respected globally.

Reacting to the announcement, his son and fellow Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, described the honour as deeply meaningful. He said Fela has always lived in the hearts of the people, and the recognition from the Grammys feels like a long-overdue validation of his impact and legacy.

Fela’s former manager and close associate, Rikki Stein, also welcomed the development, noting that while the recognition came late, it remains significant, especially given how African artists were often overlooked in global award spaces in the past.

Family members, friends and long-time collaborators are expected to be present at the Grammy ceremony to receive the award on Fela’s behalf, celebrating a legacy built on fearless expression, cultural pride and resistance through music.

Beyond his artistry, Fela was a relentless critic of injustice, corruption and military rule in Nigeria. His music was inseparable from his activism, a stance that brought him into repeated conflict with authorities. That struggle reached a tragic peak in 1977 after the release of Zombie, when soldiers attacked his Kalakuta Republic commune, an incident that led to the death of his mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti.

Rather than silence him, the loss strengthened his resolve. Fela turned grief into protest, confronting power head-on and leaving behind a body of work that remains as bold, relevant and uncompromising as ever.
