Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, has officially unveiled the logo and mascot for the 2026 West Africa Universities Games, which will take place from October 2 to October 12, 2026.
The unveiling ceremony was held at the university, where Vice Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, expressed confidence in the institution’s readiness to welcome student athletes from across West Africa for the regional sporting event.
He described the Games as more than a sporting competition, saying they will provide an opportunity to strengthen friendship, promote academic excellence and encourage cultural exchange among participating universities.
According to Bamire, hosting the tournament is not only a responsibility for the university but also a significant contribution to Nigeria and the entire West African region.
He noted that Obafemi Awolowo University has built a strong reputation over the years through academic excellence, sound administration, innovation, character development and sporting success, making it well positioned to host an event of such importance.
The Vice Chancellor said the West Africa Universities Games have continued to unite higher institutions across the sub region by encouraging healthy competition, mutual respect and stronger cultural ties.
He explained that the newly unveiled mascot represents courage, energy, hospitality and friendliness, qualities that reflect both the university’s values and the welcoming nature of Nigeria.
Bamire also disclosed that preparations for the Games are progressing steadily, with various committees working to ensure every aspect of the competition meets international standards.
He said sporting facilities are being upgraded where necessary, while arrangements for accommodation, transportation, healthcare, security and volunteer training have all been given top priority to guarantee a smooth and successful tournament.
He added that the university is committed to delivering an unforgettable edition of the Games, with a strong focus on quality organisation, safety, fairness, excellent hospitality and a lasting legacy that will serve as a model for future editions of the competition.
