Motorists and residents plying the vital Ishaga-Abeokuta-Igboora route in the Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State are experiencing a renewed sense of relief following the commencement of comprehensive maintenance works by the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency. According to recent reports gathered by Zoyols News, the intervention is specifically designed to tackle long-standing infrastructural and security challenges on the highway, with completion expected within a month.
The extensive rehabilitation schedule encompasses critical aspects of road upkeep, including rigorous vegetation control, systematic desilting of the carriageway, and targeted patching of potholes that have long troubled road users. Speaking during an on-site inspection, the Federal Road Maintenance Engineer for Ogun State, Mustapha Yakubu, noted that the project received direct approval from the agency’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Chukwuemeka Agbasi, underscoring a commitment to preserving critical transport corridors.
Yakubu highlighted that this project builds upon a broader framework of continuous highway maintenance across the state, pointing to similar recent interventions executed along the Isaga-Ilaro-Owode-Egbado route and the Abeokuta-Bakarari stretch. Beyond smooth transit, engineers emphasized the strategic importance of clearing dense roadside vegetation. Overgrown bushes along the corridor have historically provided cover for criminal elements, and clearing them is expected to significantly curb security threats, such as past armed robbery incidents, while simultaneously boosting visibility for night drivers.
Furthermore, desilting the carriageway plays an equally pivotal role in protecting the substantial investments put into public infrastructure. Proper drainage maintenance prevents water pooling, ensuring smoother vehicular movement and considerably extending the operational lifespan of the asphalt. In a deliberate move toward grassroots economic impact, the project has also absorbed fifty local youths from surrounding communities, offering temporary empowerment and employment opportunities.
Local stakeholders have been quick to voice their approval of the ongoing efforts. Community leaders, including Chief Adeniji Adeniyi representing the Ifenidagba Soke Community Association and the Area Community Development Committee, expressed profound appreciation to the Federal Government for heeding their calls. Residents like Leke Nuga noted that businesses and late-night commuters stand to benefit immensely, especially given the bustling commercial activities that stretch late into the evening.
Commercial drivers who endure the daily grind of the route have shared similar sentiments. Jimoh Aliu Aboyade recounted the heavy toll the deteriorating highway previously took on commercial vehicles, causing frequent mechanical damage and heightened stress for drivers navigating toward the Iseyin axis. With repairs now in full swing, motorists are optimistic that the restoration will permanently ease their commuting burdens and restore safety to a vital regional artery.
