Renowned statesman Jim Nwobodo has been confirmed as the chairman for the upcoming 15th Chief Emeka Anyaoku Distinguished Lecture Series on Good Governance. The event, which has earned a reputation as a premier “Ideas Arena” for national discourse, is scheduled to take place in Owerri on April 9, 2026.
The selection of the former governor of old Anambra State, who also served as a minister and senator, was based on his extensive track record in Nigerian politics and his consistent contributions to the country’s governance structures. Organizers noted that Nwobodo’s career path aligns perfectly with the values of leadership and accountability that the lecture series seeks to promote.
Named in honor of Chief Emeka Anyaoku, the former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations and a respected global diplomat, the annual lecture serves as a vital platform for intellectual and policy-driven debate. The forum brings together a diverse group of stakeholders, including academics, diplomats, civil society leaders, and political figures, to discuss the most pressing issues facing the Nigerian state.
The core objective of this gathering is to foster meaningful conversations around constitutional reforms, national unity, and institutional development. Historically organized by the Youth Affairs International Foundation with support from various state governments, the series has previously been hosted in major cities like Port Harcourt and Enugu, attracting some of the most influential voices in West Africa.
In a formal correspondence addressed to the elder statesman, the coordinator of the lecture series, Ambassador Johnson Ogbonna, expressed profound gratitude for Nwobodo’s acceptance of the role. Ogbonna highlighted that the executive board and the honouree himself were unanimous in their decision, citing Nwobodo’s legacy as a reflection of the governance standards needed for the current generation.
By providing a space for such high-level engagement, the “Ideas Arena” continues to influence policy direction and advocate for an improved federal balance in Nigeria. This year’s edition in Owerri is expected to further that mission, focusing on sustainable growth and the strengthening of democratic values across the federation.
