Lagos Hosts 2nd National School Volleyball Championships Today

Zoyols News

The Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos has become a hive of activity as the second edition of the National School Volleyball Championships officially gets underway today. For the next four days, student-athletes from various parts of the country will be battling for dominance in a tournament that has quickly become a cornerstone for youth sports development in Nigeria.

The event is a result of a collaborative effort between the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) and the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), with significant support from the Lagos State Sports Commission. Schools representing states such as Osun, Rivers, Bayelsa, Adamawa, Ogun, Taraba, Bauchi, and the host city, Lagos, are already on the ground. Beyond the trophies, the stakes are particularly high this year, as technical officials are monitoring every serve and spike to scout for talent.

The primary goal of this championship is to identify the brightest young stars who will fly Nigeria’s flag on the global stage. The best performers from this Lagos showdown will be shortlisted for the International School Sport Federation (ISF) World School Volleyball Championship, which is scheduled to take place in China from July 1 to July 10.

NSSF President, Olabisi Joseph, shared her excitement regarding the impressive turnout and the growing passion for the sport within the school system. She pointed out that Nigeria is naturally blessed with talent, and volleyball has become a powerful tool for fostering healthy competition and discipline among students. She emphasized that these events are about more than just winning; they are about building the “total child” by balancing athletic excellence with academic growth.

This tournament follows a successful maiden edition held in Abuja, where the host teams dominated both the boys’ and girls’ categories. That initial event served its purpose well, as standout players from the FCT, Plateau, and Kaduna states went on to represent Nigeria at the 2025 world championships in China.

As the games begin at Teslim Balogun Stadium, many see this as a life-changing opportunity for these young players. For many, it is not just a game, but a chance to catch the eye of global scouts and begin a journey that could lead from the local courts of Lagos to the international arenas of the world.
