Swift’s Big Comeback: How It Won the Unified Access Licence

Zoyols News
Nearly three decades after first appearing on the Nigerian telecommunications scene as a modest umbrella-and-table calling spot, Swift Telephone Network Limited has staged a remarkable comeback by securing the coveted Unified Access Services licence from the Nigerian Communications Commission.
The company’s journey began back in 1998 under the visionary leadership of the late Barrister Clara Adetuyi, whose initial assignment was supporting the NUGA Games. Refusing to let modest beginnings limit long-term ambitions, the firm quickly pioneered several industry milestones. Between 1999 and 2000, it introduced voicemail services to the University of Lagos community, a groundbreaking feat at the time. By 2003, it became the premier provider of digital landline services in Yaba, filling a vital gap before major operators arrived, while also powering WAEC Direct to help millions of candidates check exam results.
The network’s footprint soon expanded to serve the Nigerian military, the World Health Organization, and various government parastatals. After securing its independent operational licenses in 2005 and formalizing a name change in 2008, the company faced severe headwinds. In November 2010, operations ground to a halt due to heavy infrastructure losses and internal boardroom challenges—a hurdle that would have spelled the end for most enterprises.
Resilience defined the next phase of the company’s history. In February 2017, Oluwole Adetuyi stepped in to revive the enterprise alongside Yetunde Okafor. Together, they cleared regulatory obligations, had their license reinstated by 2019, and weathered the subsequent disruptions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather than retreating, leadership opted for aggressive transformation, formally submitting an application for the Unified Access Service Licence in February 2022.
Zoyols News understands that this regulatory approval opens an expansive new chapter for the firm. Reflecting on the milestone, Oluwole Adetuyi noted that the achievement serves as a bridge rather than a final destination, bridging the gap from a small business center in the late nineties to a fully licensed major operator.
Looking ahead, the company is shifting its focus toward aggressive expansion, indigenous capacity building, engineering skills development, and strategic partnerships with local vendors. As the leadership team prepares to roll out new connectivity plans in the coming weeks, Zoyols News observes that Swift Telephone Network Limited is positioning itself not just to rejoin the telecommunications arena, but to actively shape Nigeria’s digital future.
