The ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia has triggered fresh international controversy following allegations of illegal recruitment of African citizens into the conflict. In Kenya, authorities charged a 33-year-old recruitment agency founder, Festus Omwamba, over claims that he helped send more than a thousand Kenyans to fight for Russian forces. Omwamba, founder of Global Face Human Resources, was arrested in Moyale, a border town near Ethiopia, before being presented in court on human trafficking allegations. Zoyols reports that prosecutors say he used deception to lure young job seekers with false promises of employment opportunities abroad.
The Director of Public Prosecutions in Kenya alleged that at least twenty-two Kenyan youths were recruited under false pretences and transported to Russia for exploitation. Some victims reportedly believed they were travelling for civilian employment before being forced to sign military contracts. According to lawmakers such as Kimani Ichung’wah, intelligence reports suggest more than 1,000 Kenyans may have joined Russian military operations in recent months. Several of those recruited were reportedly sent to frontlines in Ukraine with minimal military training, leading to injuries and deaths. Some survivors told journalists that they were promised jobs as sales agents, security personnel, or athletes, only to find themselves deployed in combat zones.
The recruitment controversy has extended beyond Kenya. In South Africa, authorities reported that several citizens were also tricked into joining private military operations connected to the war. Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola confirmed that at least two South Africans had died fighting for Russian forces in Ukraine. He explained that some men were recruited under the guise of security training programmes linked to political and private networks, including allegations involving supporters of former president Jacob Zuma. South African law prohibits citizens from fighting for foreign armies without government authorization, making these cases legally and politically sensitive.
There have also been similar concerns in Nigeria, where officials warned citizens against foreign recruitment scams. Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, said intelligence reports show Nigerians were being lured with promises of jobs, education, or migration opportunities before being redirected into military roles. Although the Russian embassy in Nigeria, represented by ambassador Andrey Podyelyshev, rejected the allegations as propaganda, European Union envoy to Nigeria Gautier Mignot insisted that Russia is actively recruiting Africans to support its war effort, citing growing military pressure and troop shortages.
Mignot further claimed that many Africans were being targeted with misleading job offers and later deployed to dangerous combat zones. Ukrainian authorities also stated that more than 1,780 citizens from 36 African countries had been identified among Russian forces, with some reportedly captured during military operations. The situation has sparked global concern about the vulnerability of young job seekers across Africa and the rising role of international networks in recruitment schemes connected to the conflict.
